Should I wait to train until Home Star is signed into law?
Don’t Wait to Train! Five reasons why you shouldn't wait one more day to register for BPI training.
- Training classes cannot exceed 15 students per class and all certifications require passage of both a written and field tests. BPI Affiliates will likely be unable to quickly train and field-certify all of the students that will want certification. Wait times are expected to exceed three months as classes and field proctors become available for all who wish to train.
- BPI Building Analysts require sophisticated blower door and related equipment to perform the tasks associated with a Home Star audit. Lead times for audit equipment have been as long as six weeks during the past year.
- Successful completion of BPI Training program is the beginning of the certification process. Once training is complete, student information and scoring is submitted to BPI for approval and issuance of official certification card, a process that has taken as long as six weeks at times during the past year.
- Get some experience. You want a little time to practice on family and friends.
- This is simply the best career opportunity to come along in your lifetime. Home Star will save the business that position themselves for the opportunity. In the current economic climate, anyone involved in the construction field will miss the greatest opportunity in the next or the last 20 years. It’s not too late yet. Get certified now!
The Bottom Line: Get it done now or risk waiting months for certification once Home Star becomes law.
Top Five Reasons to Avoid Online BPI-certification Courses
Taking an online course is a risky path to BPI certification.
- No one can become BPI-certified online. This is a hands-on course! Becoming BPI-certified requires the student to pass both a 100-question written exam and a comprehensive field test. The field test must be done in person. Even if one is fortunate enough to pass the written part of the exam, one must still have to physically go somewhere, perhaps out-of-state, to receive a timely field exam.
- BPI gives students only three chances to pass the written exam. Students are only allowed to fail the 100-question exam twice. If you are unsuccessful on the third attempt, you have to wait a whole year to re-test! The 100-question exam draws from a library of more than 800 test questions; a student never receives the same exam twice. Re-testing costs $250 each time the student is forced to re-take the exam.
- Online courses cannot provide the student with the hands-on experience necessary to successfully obtain BPI certification. BPI certification requires a student to successfully pass the field exam, including successfully conducting health and safety tests, CAZ testing, multiple blower door tests often in a de-pressurized home. The student must also demonstrate mastery of sophisticated equipment, including blower door, manometer, pressure pans, CO tester, natural gas sniffer, smoke pen, draft probe and thermal imaging camera.
- Online course prices routinely exclude the cost of field training or the BPI written test and field exam. Once these costs, often $500 or more plus travel, are added to the cost of online training, the price for online training is often more expensive than the classroom and field training.
- Intensive, classroom and hands-on training is a proven method for successfully obtaining BPI certification. Invest in your success by putting aside less time to obtain a better chance of success. The total classroom and field training necessary to prepare for BPI certification is less than 26 hours compared to some online courses with classes lasting 30 hours or more. Your time is valuable.
